Political leaders from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are set to join forces in a coordinated push for greater self-determination, increasing pressure on Westminster over the constitutional futures of the three nations.
SNP leader John Swinney, Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth and Sinn Féin vice president Michelle O’Neill are expected to meet in Cardiff, where they will sign a joint pledge supporting the right of people in their respective nations to determine their political futures through democratic processes.
The agreement represents a rare coordinated effort by nationalist parties across three parts of the United Kingdom to challenge Westminster’s control over decisions concerning constitutional change.
The leaders are expected to argue that people in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland should have the democratic right to decide their own futures rather than having such decisions determined solely by the UK Government.
For Scotland and Wales, the initiative strengthens ongoing debates surrounding independence and greater national autonomy. In Northern Ireland, Sinn Féin continues to advocate for Irish reunification through the mechanisms established under the Good Friday Agreement.
