Pharm. Allen S.E. has called on political leaders from Arogbo Ijaw Kingdom to respond urgently to the flooding affecting several communities across the kingdom.
Allen made the appeal in an opinion article in which he expressed concern over the impact of the flooding on residents, homes and properties across parts of Arogbo Kingdom.
According to him, several communities have been severely affected by rising floodwaters, with Awodikuro, Agoeri, Ogidigba and Ogokiri among the areas he identified as being affected.
He also referenced communities along the Arogbo City-New Jerusalem axis, saying residents in several locations were facing serious difficulties as floodwaters continued to rise.
Allen further alleged that a baby died after being swept away by floodwaters while the child's mother was attempting to relocate the family to safety.
The reported casualty could not be independently verified from reliable public sources at the time of publication.
The author also criticised what he described as the limited public response of some political leaders from the kingdom, arguing that elected representatives and political office holders should be more visible during the emergency.
He questioned why some political figures who, according to him, have provided assistance to flood victims in other communities have not demonstrated similar levels of intervention in Arogbo.
Allen, however, commended the Agadagba, Pere of Arogbo Ijaw Kingdom, for visiting parts of Arogbo City to assess the impact of the flooding.
He described the monarch's reported visit as a demonstration of concern for residents affected by the disaster.
Beyond the immediate flood crisis, Allen linked what he described as political neglect to the kingdom's level of grassroots political mobilisation.
He argued that Arogbo's population could give the kingdom greater political influence if residents were better organised around voter registration and participation in elections.
According to him, insufficient mobilisation over the years has weakened the kingdom's ability to use its electoral strength to demand greater government attention.
Allen called on political leaders from Arogbo Kingdom, including those currently holding public office and those seeking political positions, to prioritise the welfare of the communities from which they originate.
He also appealed for relief and other forms of assistance for residents affected by the flooding.
The appeal comes as flooding continues to pose a serious humanitarian challenge across parts of Nigeria. Recent reporting on Nigeria's wider flood situation has highlighted the growing risks posed by flooding to homes, livelihoods, food security and public safety.
