Ojobo Federated Communities Demand Urgent Healthcare Intervention in Delta Riverine Areas

The Ojobo Federated Communities in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State have called on the state government to urgently intervene in the deteriorating condition of healthcare facilities serving riverine and creek communities across the state.

The communities appealed to the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojeame, to prioritise the rehabilitation and improvement of government-owned hospitals and health centres located in remote riverine settlements.

In a statement signed by Priest Timipre Ndoni, Kariowei of Osuopele Beniseide, Ojobo Federated Communities, Operemor Kingdom, Burutu LGA Delta State, the communities expressed concern over the poor state of many healthcare facilities, noting that several centres are either poorly equipped, understaffed or unable to provide adequate medical services to residents.

The communities specifically highlighted the challenges faced by settlements such as Ojobo, Burutu and other creek areas, where access to healthcare remains difficult due to waterways, transportation barriers and the absence of functional medical facilities close to residents.

According to Ndoni, healthcare services in riverine communities require urgent government attention because the availability of a functional hospital often determines whether residents receive timely treatment during emergencies.

“For people living in the creeks, accessing healthcare is already difficult because of the waterways and transportation challenges. A functional government hospital within these communities is therefore not a luxury; it is a necessity and, in many cases, the difference between life and death,” he stated.

The Ojobo Federated Communities urged the Delta State Government to immediately embark on the renovation and upgrading of affected healthcare facilities, provide essential medical equipment and drugs, and ensure the deployment of adequate medical personnel, including doctors, nurses, midwives and other healthcare professionals.

They also called for sustainable funding, regular maintenance of health facilities and special healthcare programmes designed to address the unique challenges of riverine and hard-to-reach communities.

The group noted that the welfare programmes and development commitments of the Oborevwori administration should extend to residents living in the most remote parts of Delta State.

“Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration has repeatedly spoken about improving the welfare and wellbeing of Deltans. We therefore appeal that this commitment should also be felt by citizens living in the most remote communities of the state,” Ndoni said.

The communities stressed that the appeal was not a political criticism but a genuine call for immediate action to protect human lives and promote inclusive development.

“The people of the creeks deserve functioning hospitals too. Healthcare should not depend on whether a person lives in Asaba, Warri, or deep inside the creeks. Every Deltan deserves access to safe, functional and affordable healthcare,” the statement added.

The Ojobo Federated Communities further appealed to the Governor and the Commissioner for Health to act before preventable illnesses and medical emergencies claim more lives.

“Our communities deserve better. Our people deserve functional healthcare,” Ndoni stated.
