Reality TV star Terseer Waya, popularly known as Kiddwaya, has stirred debate online after arguing that Nigeria would have been more developed had British colonial rule continued for another 10 to 15 years, claiming the country would have been better developed if the colonial masters had stayed 10 to 15 years longer than they left.
In a post on X, he wrote, "Unpopular opinion. The British should have stayed in Nigeria for 10/15 more years. You go see better development."
The comment has drawn mixed reactions, with some Nigerians pointing to persistent governance challenges since independence as reason to entertain the argument, while others insist an extended colonial period would have simply given Britain more time to extract the country's resources rather than build lasting development, with reactions divided over whether continued colonial rule would have improved Nigeria's development.
Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, following years of nationalist agitation, and became a republic in 1963, formally severing remaining constitutional ties to the Crown.
