Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has visited Otukpo-Nobi in Benue State, one of several communities recently attacked by non-state actors, where he expressed solidarity with victims and renewed his call on the Federal Government to strengthen efforts to secure lives and property across the country.
In a statement, Obi said he travelled to Otukpo-Nobi where over 10 persons were reportedly killed or remain missing, with several others injured and currently receiving hospital treatment following the attack. He noted that a neighbouring community, Efeyi-Ugboju, was also affected, with over 13 persons reportedly killed and several others injured. He said that during the visit, he was further informed that 14 persons had been kidnapped along Ankpechi Road earlier that morning.
Obi said he joined members of the community in prayers for the repose of the souls of the deceased at the site of a mass burial for victims of the attack. He also visited the hospital to sympathise with the injured, express solidarity with them, and pray for their quick recovery.
Following the visit, Obi called on the Federal Government to demonstrate stronger commitment to protecting the lives and property of citizens and to closing the ungoverned spaces he said have become breeding grounds for insecurity across the country.
He stressed that the primary purpose of government is the security and welfare of its citizens, and that where government fails in this responsibility, as he said has happened with the people of Otukpo-Nobi, Efeyi-Ugboju and other troubled communities, it must be reminded of that obligation.
Obi concluded by praying for the eternal repose of the souls of those who lost their lives in the attacks.
