A 68-year-old British grandmother has spoken out about her distressing marital ordeal, claiming her 31-year-old Nigerian husband vanished shortly after relocating to the United Kingdom on a spouse visa.
Dawn Otewell, a resident of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, met Bright Emokpae on online dating platforms in 2021. According to Dawn, Emokpae initially used an alias and misrepresented his age before they eventually built a bond through regular video calls. The couple tied the knot at a registry office in Nicosia, Cyprus, on March 22, 2022, after which Emokpae returned to Nigeria to file for a UK spouse visa.
Upon the approval of his visa, Dawn joyfully welcomed him at Heathrow Airport. However, she claims the dynamic of the relationship shifted drastically soon after his arrival. Dawn alleged that her husband became emotionally distant, refused to contribute to household bills, frequently requested cash, and prioritized sending money back to Nigeria.
Following a series of separations and temporary reconciliations—including a period after Dawn received a £63,000 compensation payout—the relationship hit a final breaking point. Dawn stated that Emokpae packed up and left after she returned from a Caribbean cruise in December 2024. She has not heard from him in months, noting that he blocked her on social media and likely relocated to Scotland to run an online clothing business.
Today, Dawn is desperate to legally sever ties. She accuses her husband of exploiting her strictly to secure residency rights, stating, "He's done a runner and is refusing to sign the divorce papers because I believe he wants to cling on to his spouse visa."
Beyond feeling emotionally cheated, Dawn harbors major anxieties regarding her estate. Because she has not yet drafted a will, she fears that if she passes away before the divorce is legally finalized, Emokpae could lay claim to assets meant for her children.
