The United Bank for Africa Plc has formally welcomed Emmanuel Nnorom as its new Group Chairman, following his appointment days after the retirement of long-serving chairman, Tony Elumelu.
UBA announced the transition in a statement shared on its official social media platforms on Wednesday, describing Nnorom as a seasoned business leader and chartered accountant with over four decades of professional experience.
Nnorom officially took over the position on August 21, 2026, succeeding Elumelu, who stepped down after completing the maximum tenure allowed for non-executive directors under the Central Bank of Nigeria's corporate governance guidelines.
In its statement, UBA said, "We welcome Mr. Emmanuel N. Nnorom as the new Group Chairman of United Bank for Africa Plc. A seasoned business leader and chartered accountant with over four decades of experience."
The bank highlighted Nnorom's long-standing relationship with the UBA Group, noting that he had spent more than eight years in various senior leadership roles within the organisation, including as Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa, Group Chief Operating Officer, and Group Chief Financial Officer, before later serving as a Non-Executive Director on the board.
"With his wealth of experience and understanding of UBA's journey, Mr. Nnorom takes the helm at an important moment in the Group's continued growth across Africa and beyond," the bank stated.
Nnorom joined the UBA board as a Non-Executive Director in 2024, after an extensive executive career within the group that included roles as Executive Director (Finance), Executive Director (Risk), Executive Director (Group Executive Office), and Group Chief Operating Officer. As CEO of UBA Africa, he oversaw the bank's operations across multiple African countries, playing a key role in its pan-African expansion drive.
Beyond UBA, Nnorom has held notable leadership positions in Nigeria's corporate space. He served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Transnational Corporation Plc between September 2014 and May 2017, and has been Group Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Holdings since June 2017.
His banking career also spans senior management roles at Standard Trust Bank (now UBA), Diamond Bank, NUB International Bank, and Liberty Merchant Bank.
Nnorom is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and an Honorary Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria. He also completed executive leadership and management programmes at Templeton College, Oxford.
UBA described his appointment as coming at a pivotal time in the bank's continued expansion across Africa and beyond.
