Former Councilor of Ekeremor Local Government Area, Stephen Alafia Imiemene, has died, throwing his community and family into mourning. Imiemene had aspired to represent Ekeremor Constituency 3 in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and contested the recently conducted NDC primary election for the party’s ticket. He, however, did not emerge as the winner of the primary.
Imiemene, who previously represented his people at the local government level, was widely known for his commitment to public service and his deep ties to the Letugbene and Bilabiri communities, where he was regarded as a respected stakeholder and mentor to many. Beyond politics, he was known as a devoted man of God, with associates describing him as someone who saw his Christian faith as inseparable from active service to his community.
According to family sources and community members, Imiemene was remembered not only for his time in elective office but also for his personal involvement in the affairs of ordinary residents, including the fisherfolk, traders and families who made up his constituency. He was described as approachable and generous with his time, often extending support and counsel to people well beyond his official duties.
Although he did not secure the party's ticket for the Ekeremor Constituency 3 seat, community members say his aspiration reflected his continued desire to serve, and that his conduct throughout the process earned him the respect of supporters and rivals alike. Many recall that he remained active in community and church affairs even after the primary, never allowing the setback to diminish his commitment to his people.
News of his passing has drawn an outpouring of condolences from residents of Ekeremor and the wider Ijaw community, with many describing him as a bridge between traditional community values and modern governance. Tributes have particularly highlighted his role in shaping the political consciousness of young people in his area and his consistent presence in community and church affairs.
Details of funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
Izon Daily joins the Imiemene family, the people of Bilabiri, Letugbene and Ekeremor Local Government Area in mourning the loss of a dedicated public servant and man of faith.
