A new political projection has placed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party's Peter Obi as Nigeria's 2027 presidential contest begins to take shape.

The Political Intelligence Group (PIG) of Politico.ng projects that if elections were held today, Tinubu would win 20 states, Atiku would take nine, and Obi would secure eight states plus the Federal Capital Territory. The group was quick to stress that the figures are a snapshot of current political alignments, not a prediction of the eventual outcome, noting that Nigeria's political terrain remains fluid heading into 2027.

Tinubu's projected strength rests heavily on his South-West base, where he is expected to sweep all six states, with Lagos firmly in his column. The forecast also gives him Kano, a populous northern battleground state, which analysts say could signal a broader national coalition beyond his traditional stronghold. Still, PIG cautioned that economic conditions, including inflation, unemployment, and the cost of living, could reshape his standing before voters go to the polls.

Atiku's projected nine states lean heavily on his established northern support, including Kaduna. His challenge, according to the forecast, will be extending that strength into southern Nigeria to build a competitive national coalition. Rising transportation and living costs may work in his favour if hardship persists.

Obi, meanwhile, is projected to retain the momentum built during his 2023 run, with eight states and the FCT, including Edo, in his column. His support base remains strongest among voters seeking accountability and governance reform, though the forecast suggests his path to victory depends on expanding that appeal geographically.

PIG identified political realignment, possible alliances, and opposition coalition-building as the biggest wildcards that could reshape the current numbers. Defections, running-mate choices, and how the economy performs between now and 2027 were all flagged as factors capable of shifting the political map.

For now, the projection stands: Tinubu 20 states, Atiku nine, Obi eight, and the FCT to Obi, with more than a year still to go before Nigerians head to the polls.
