Daniel Umemezie, a Nigerian-American poet, has been named the 2026-2027 U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate, becoming the 10th person to hold the title and only the second Nigerian-American to receive the honour.

The U.S. Mission Nigeria announced his selection in a statement on Friday, describing him as a gifted voice whose work explores heritage, identity and the layered experience of growing up between two cultures. He follows Salome Agbaroji, who became the first Nigerian-American to receive the title in 2023.

The National Youth Poet Laureate programme recognises outstanding young poets across the United States and offers them a platform to reach wider audiences. Umemezie was selected in April from hundreds of young writers and local youth poets laureate nationwide.

Speaking to journalist Fred Lazaro in an interview published by PBS NewsHour on July 15, the 18-year-old poet described a childhood steeped in the arts, saying he learned piano over 14 years alongside several other instruments and creative pursuits, from drawing and painting to architecture. He also developed an early love of reading, drawing from his preacher father's home library.

Umemezie spent his early years in Nigeria before relocating to the United States at age 13, when his mother secured a nursing job there. The family settled first in Texas before later moving to Iowa, a transition that exposed him to sharp cultural contrasts and became a defining influence on his writing.

Poetry became his way of reconciling those two worlds. In one widely shared poem, he reflects on holding two versions of Nigeria within himself, one rooted in language, memory and warmth, the other shaped by daily hardship and resilience, describing the sensation of the two identities alternating rather than colliding within him.

Umemezie said memory remains a central theme running through his work. His writing career took off after an English teacher encouraged him to enter a local poetry competition during his sophomore year, a competition he went on to win. He was subsequently named Cedar Valley Youth Poet Laureate and Iowa Student Poet Ambassador before claiming the national title.

He succeeds a line of poets that includes Amanda Gorman, the inaugural National Youth Poet Laureate in 2017, who later read at President Joe Biden's 2021 inauguration.

As the new national laureate, Umemezie is expected to travel across the United States for readings and workshops, with plans to champion poetry centred on social justice, political participation and self-exploration. He graduated from high school in May and intends to study aerospace engineering at Iowa State University.
